On October 27, 2018, first responders entered the Tree of Life Synagogue knowing innocent people were trapped inside and that an armed gunman was still actively killing. They moved toward the danger anyway.

Priority of Life tells the story behind that decision. Told through the experiences of Pittsburgh SWAT officers, first responders, and survivors Andrea Wedner and Dan Leger, the film explores the principle that guides emergency responders in moments of crisis: the willingness to place themselves at extraordinary risk to save the lives of others.

Using the events of the Tree of Life attack as its backdrop, Priority of Life moves beyond tactics and operational analysis to examine the human cost of service. It reveals how these life-and-death moments shape those who respond, the burdens they carry long after the incident ends, and the profound commitment that compels ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts.

At its core, Priority of Life is a story about courage, sacrifice, and the enduring responsibility first responders accept when someone else's life depends on them.

Why I Made This Film

While Confronting Hate focused on understanding the incident itself, Priority of Life explores a different question: Why do first responders willingly run toward danger when others are running away?

Using the same events as its foundation, this film shifts the focus from tactics to people. It examines the principle of “priority of life” and the extraordinary commitment first responders make when innocent lives are at risk. My hope is that this film helps audiences better understand the sacrifices, responsibilities, and lasting impact that come with answering that call.
