The 9 Practices
Nine leadership practices for building elite organizational culture, drawn from decades of working with the world's highest-performing teams. Each practice is a chapter in Culture First and contains 4–6 implementation tools.
Build Culture Intentionally
Elite units don't leave culture to chance. They define it explicitly and hold everyone accountable to it. Culture neglected becomes culture corrupted.
Build a Team of Selfless Leaders
Your job is to get the right answers, not to have them. Servant leaders own the team losses and share credit for wins. The best leaders build cathedrals for their community, not monuments to themselves.
Select the Right People
You can develop skills, but you cannot instill character. The wrong person in the wrong role damages culture in ways that take years to repair. Get selection right and everything else becomes easier.
Embrace Strong People
The best performers bring independent judgment rather than mere compliance. They challenge assumptions and make their leaders better.
Enforce High Standards
The behavior you ignore is the behavior you endorse. Without accountability, your standards erode, your top performers leave, and the culture drifts toward mediocrity.
Collaborate Deliberately
Elite teams systematically harvest the best thinking from everyone, regardless of rank or position. The best idea wins, regardless of who offered it.
Build a Decision Machine
Decisions should be made by whoever has the best information and is closest to the problem. Elite units push decision authority down to where the information lives. Not deciding is a decision.
Improve Continuously
Continuous improvement isn't a program. It's a mindset. Elite organizations are constantly focused at an individual and organizational level on getting better.
Take Risks & Embrace Failure
There is no path to success without risk, but elite units manage risk carefully and always learn from their failures. Risk is the currency of a leader.
